thai rainbow mangoes

it must be end of thai mango seasons as everyone seems to be offering sales on thai honey & rainbow mangoes. have been buying them recently and today these rainbow mangoes are going at S$3.45 for 4pcs @ NTUC.

lovely! wish these sales could go on forever :)

my first taste of soto betawani was actually indomie instant mee version which i bought from batam, it has a light spicy aroma with hint of cumin. however, i read the real thing suppose to be thicken with coconut milk, hence i conclude the instant mee version is not authentic taste of betawani (actually i can add coconut milk myself to make to closer)

so when i spotted soto betawani @ kopitiam at recently open jcube shopping mall, i immediately order a set (even when i just my lunch an hour ago). for S$5, it comes with either rice + keropok & either chicken/beef in yellowish broth with tomato & potato.

the yellowish broth (probably due to turmeric) was rather creamy & lightly spiced but felt it’s still rather thin. while it’s a new taste experience for me, i can’t say i like it as i would refer the broth to be thicker with strong spice taste.

perhaps i should start hunting for soto betawani around singapore soon.

grilled saba

i’m in love with korean grilled saba (mackerel)
not anywhere but only there
perfectly grilled, soft juicy flesh, crispy bones
serve on sizzling iron hotplate
with caramelized onions
over a savory fruity sauce
they often comes with the tail
i love munching on crispy tail
and slowly chew the crispy bone
once i’m done with soft juicy flesh
i like to add lots of white sesame
and chopped spring onions too
making it colorful & aromatic
i just can’t have enough

just when i’m trying to get off one
a new addiction suddenly found me
oh what a “great” start for 2012!

Walk 342 / 365 Breaking 85

HEALTH
There seems to be an invisible support at 85. Whenever I reach near 85 ~ 86, an invisible force seems to be pushing it back to 86 ~ 87. Of coz I’m talking about my weight. Having religiously running on elliptical machine for 2 months or so, I had expected to reach 80. Sadly that didn’t happen.

Whatever, I’m still happy with my new simple workout routine, just run @ aerobic heart rate zone! And I do really find running a good way to burn my calories away. Now in Dec, I have increase from daily 30min to 60min, burning about 700++ calories per workout (if machine reading is right). Breaking 85 or not, I guess I’m contented for now that it isn’t go up & I’m feeling refresh after every workout.

FOOD
One fine sunday morning, I decide to try out “Freshly Baked by Le Bijoux”. I love freshly baked breads so the shopname already got me interested.

Unfortunately, it was a disappointment. I had order their signature BLT and to my dismay, the breads were not even warm. Just cold bread with some lettuce, bacon & avocado slapped in between. I have to ask to lightly toast, I think they toast the whole sandwich, so the lettuce came out sogging after that. *bleah*

LIFE
Can’t find any good value for blogging and been thinking to stop. Yeah, it’s sure good to journal but I’ve been doing that separately. so it sort like double work. So taking blogging off should allow me to have some more time to think & plan. hmmmm …..

TRAVEL
Thinking ……. where to go next
TAIWAN ~ around island
HOKKAIDO ~ another attempt after last year failure as I could manage to get enough leave days

KOREA JEJU, HALLASAN & SEOUL, SORAKSAN HIKES

Walk 283/365 After dark

READ
I didn’t finish the great gatsby, didn’t like the storyline, but i certainly like his way of writing. Maybe left for another day.

Instead i finished another murakami ~ after dark. This about what happens in tokyo during the time when i suppose to sound asleep.

Storytelling take place from 3rd eye viewpoint. Music, food & heart 2 heart filled this very hour. Chapters alternate between 2 seemingly unrelated characters initially but gradually connected via series of events ~ a style which is similar to 1Q84 but of coz this is hjs earlier short stories.

Again there are some bizzare incidents which seems to pull me into the story, keep me interested to purse an ending. Unfortunately, there weren’t any ending. Perhaps that the way it was meant to be which left to readers own further exploration.

Gotta admire his attentive to details, and allow me to catch glimpse of tokyo night life which we don’t experience normally.

Having previously working in 24×7 IT i can certainly relate to sleepless frustrated deadline work which happens at some point of the book.

Again, i find his novels usually depicts thd moody, dark & at times mocking at this sick society of ours ~ something which any positive mindset fellow wouldn’t recommend u to read.

Still his story never fails to delight me. Perhaps i’m moody person, maybe living in the darkside as well & enjoying music, food, travel & slowlife.

Perhaps i’m becoming too murakami? Is that bad? Hmmmmm ………

Jealousy – Pet Shop Boys (Piece of music in After Dark)

FOOD
I’m not too sure why I get so workout when I have to pay $5.50 for a plate of hainanese chicken rice. It used to cost $4.50. Alright it’s 22% more than usual but still not a reason flare up.

I had ask for a plate for 1 pax, a “big” plate of chicken arrived. Big in the sense that it looked more than serving for a pax. Also, “Big” in the sense that I know, underneath those regular pieces of chicken are just heaps of sliced cucumbers making the serving looking misleadingly “BIG”. Still, that’s no reason to get angry.

Perhaps I was very happy that I’m getting all my daily essential much cheaper earlier. And so, perhaps, this sudden swing in price expectancy had burst my initial euphoria of happiness, sending me back to this damning reality on earth.

Inflation or no, I better get ready sooner!

p.s: Anyway I had ask them to combine them to a plate, this just cost $3.50. Of coz it comes with less cucumbers as well LOLz

Walk 280/365 old town kopi

FOOD
Curious why ipoh old town white kopi costs $2.20 per cup. Frothy & smooth becoz they tarik the kopi but tastewise, just another robusta kopi. Ihmo, $2.20 for robusta cuppa is really not worth, that’s my last cuppa with them.

TRAVEL
Still tempted to get lumix LX5 for this trip, lucky no stock at all shop that i frequent. My wallet is safe for now :)

Canon s5is & lumix fx9 going for the trip with this round. Bought 4Gb SD ($15.90) for convenient sake, no need to swop cards. Bought 4 x 2500amh AA ($20+) as my old ones really conked out & can’t seems to hold charge any longer.

Packing aiming to be as light as possible. 2 sets clothing with quick dry tees. 1 set old cloth for sleep, can be disposed & make spaces for new bali tees. Pack of disposable underwear. Mobiles, Batteries, charger, travel docs with duplicates & spec, idr+sgd+credit card

Anymore essential that missed? Hmm……….

FOOD
Strange sudden addiction to glutinous rice balls with peanuts+white sesame fillings. I think the sesame makes it more fragrant. Only chinatown brand have em, ths rest only filled with peanuts.

READ
One of the strange effects after reading murakami novels. I began to read literature. Loathe them since young, hence it unbelievable. Perhaps the side effects of aging LOLZ

The great gatsby is next. In between need to finish off options volality as well.
